Are you enjoying this late summer heat wave! There’s still plenty to do out there under the hot sunshine of LA and this week is packed with cultural festivals! The LA Greek Festival, Little Ethiopia Cultural Street Festival, Fiestas Patrias, Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture and Latin American Festival are all happening this weekend! Personally though, we have a place in our heart for our Brazilian friends and Saturday is Brazilian Independence Day! Plenty of Brazilian festivities this weekend with Brazil Day in LA and San Diego and the opening of the LA Brazilian Film Festival!

Also some special occasions in our underground music & world culture community this week: my friends at the monthly TUMBE’ are celebrating their 3 years and Farah of FARAHSTOP is having a special photo exhibit SUENO VOL. 3, featuring pics of the Subsuelo crew. Wherever you are this week, dance and stay hydrated! I’ll leave you with one of my favorite Brazilian songs as I prepare to samba my bunda off this weekend!

Hello friends! I apologize for the late posts the past few weeks. I started a new day job as well as freelancing for Remezcla.com to keep their Los Angeles calendar updated, so I’ll be making these posts very short from now on. Instead of trying to cover every possible event I know about, I’m going to post my picks of the week, the events I would personally attend as well as important community events I hear about. You can find plenty of more events just like I do…plenty of resources with my Favorite Links. I started this blog quick and dirty in February and I’d really like to make a proper website with a nicer calendar — that’s my next dream for this site (time & sleep deprivation permitting!), so if you enjoy this site, please stay tuned! In the meantime, enjoy this violin cover of The Cure by Quetzal Guerrero, my tremendously talented friend & one of the most hard-working, passionate musicians in LA…don’t miss his biggest show of the year this Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Levitt Pavilion at MacArthur Park, free to all!

weekly list

Wow we’re just blazing through August! This week, the 73rd Nisei Week continues in Little Tokyo. I haven’t been to School Night in a while but one of my favs, The Peach Kings, are playing along with UK’s Cloud Control on Monday. Tuesday, legendary Molotov is playing and it’s the monthly Cali Hustle with my talented friends Quetzal Guerrero and Miss Sunny Z. Wednesday, the Red Bull Music Academy is premiering a new live music monthly This City Belongs to Me featuring Arabian Prince, Egyptian Lover and more. I finally caught Raquel Rodriquez on the Perch rooftop last week — it’s the perfect place to chill to her sultry vocals before your main Wednesday event. Discotan is having their 1 year anniversary at Footsie’s in Cypress Park and there’s a disco dance contest as part of the festivities, so get your 70s threads and platforms ready!

As usual, Thursday is out of control! Have you ever heard of a 21-member classical orchestra playing indie rock? Then you can’t miss Austin’s Mother Falcon at Amoeba. Buyepongo lights the fire at Los Globos and Bloco Nove and my friend Gisella and her samba dancers are bringing the Brazilian carnival craziness to the weekly Afro Funke’, and Funkmosphere is celebrating its 7th anniversary with Mark de Clive-Lowe in the house at The Virgil! Whew. Before the weekend madness, Friday’s a nice break with Izzy Wise (Afrolicious) and La Tigresa (Subsuelo) at the One-Eyed Gypsy and my boys DJ Gozar (Subsuelo) and KidGusto (TropiCali) opening a new music monthly Contrast, both in downtown.

Saturday….are you ready? H2O Music Festival, Echo Park Rising running thru Sunday, the last Chinatown Summer Nights of the season, theLIFT, the monthly Bombilla on the west side and the 1st Forro night at Tropico de Nopal. This Northeastern Brazilian dance craze has been spreading globally and has reached LA. And I’m not missing this one: A Tale of Two Nations: Nação Estrela Brilhante & Nation Beat at Grand Performances. Burners who can’t wait for Burning Man to get here can test out their playa gear on Sunday and my talented friends in Samba Society are going to put on a great show with a special horn section and new material at the Levitt Pavilion in Pasadena. Plenty of great bands closing out the Echo Park Rising festival on Sunday and word is there is going to be a special Bodega just for the occasion at Senor Fish in Little Tokyo.

This week’s list is always a work-in-progress (still many more events I have to post when I get back to the computer, as well as new ones I learn about as the week goes along!). So keep checking back! Do you have an LA hidden treasure or great cause people should know about? Let me know!

It’s gonna be a great week, Angelenos…too much goodness so grab your big posse and go get it!

weekly list

What’s on tap for this lovely week? Tuesday, I’m not missing Las Cafeteras’ premiere party for the Luna Lovers video. Wednesday is the start of a new Brazilian night in the South Bay along with dance & percussion classes. There’s also weekly Brazilian forro classes at Tropico de Nopal and a dance team will perform the dance at the monthly Eclectica at Eastside Luv.

Thursday is one of those nights when there’s a bizillion great events, featuring great international acts all booked on the same night in different venues far from each other. Why, organizers, why?!?! Tortured, I’ll have to choose between Bombino at Santa Monica Pier, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars at the Skirball Cultural Center and The Garifuna Collective at the Levitt Pavilion MacArthur Park. You can’t go wrong with any of those stellar talents but since I’ve seen 2 of them multiple times, I’m catching The Garifuna Collective. Let’s not forget Subsuelo is playing a free, all-ages outdoor show at Grand Park and then bringing their global bass dance party to the West Side at the RG Club. Somehow, I will also squeeze in Atropolis at Afro Funke’.

Friday, my awesome friends from Tropicali, Brasil Baile Funk, Subsuelo & Sweet Beats are joining forces for MUVUCA at Bootleg Theatre, bringing people together for a special night of tropical beats, dancing and art. Don’t miss it! I’m going to be so thoroughly exhausted after Thursday and Friday, I’m not even thinking about the weekend…but there’s plenty happening and you can’t go wrong.

This week’s list is always a work-in-progress (still many more events I have to post when I get back to the computer, as well as new ones I learn about as the week goes along!). So keep checking back! Do you have an LA hidden treasure or great cause people should know about? Let me know!

Have a great week, Angelenos…will leave you with a song from The Garifuna Collective’s new album.

Music, Dance, Film, Art & Cultural events July 22-28

weekly list

Another beautiful July week! Here are the week’s highlights I recommend: there’s usually one night that’s more jam-packed than the rest and this week, it’s Thursday! It’s the opening night of the 4th Annual Awareness Film Festival that runs thru Sunday. If you want to dance, there’s plenty to choose from: Con Todo at La Cita in downtown features Bajofloja and DJ Ethos of Subsuelo among others! Canyon Cody of Subsuelo is spinning at the new monthly Cloud City in Santa Monica along with the weekly Afro Funke featuring my friend Sista Adama Jewel’s singing debut with African Soul International. She just danced the hell out of Sunday’s Fela Kuti Celebration this past Sunday. Also on the Westside is Mandeep Sethi at the RG, a great MC who’s knocked em dead with his powerful lyrical style at many Subsuelos. And if you’re in Pasadena, you can miss Bachaco, an Afro-Caribbean band at the Levitt Pavilion.

Friday, I’ll be at Grand Performances for University of Gnawa and Ethio Cali and nearby is Buyepongo at Levitt Pavilion, MacArthur Park. Saturday, Grand Performances knocks it out of the park again with Chico Trujillo from Chile and my LA favorite, Las Cafeteras. Viver Brasilia will be celebrating their 15 years of Afro-Brazilian music and dance performances at the Ford Amphitheater and the 18th Annual Central Park Jazz Festival runs thru Sunday. I always end my Sundays at my friend DJ Potira’s weekly bunda-shaking Brasilia night in Long Beach with baile funke dance lessons!

Don’t forget there are tons of free summer concerts and activities each week, so check out the full schedule of summer goodness here:

weekly list

Another hot sunny July week! Here are the week’s highlights I recommend: Subsuelo on Wednesday. Thursday is all about the Westside with Meshell Ndegeocello and The Record Company at the Santa Monica Pier and then Afro Funke has a great band L’Esprit d’Afrique having their album release party. Friday, I’m going to start in the downtown area with lots to choose from: Red Baraat and La Chamba at FIGat7th, Mucca Pazza and Fanfare Ciocărlia at Grand Performances and Dustbowl Revival nearby at MacArthur Park and end the night at my friend’s new night Sólido Sessions in Hollywood featuring Bayonics. Saturday is totally ridiculous…just too many great events! Sunday, there is only one place to be for me and that is ArtDontSleep’s Celebration of Fela at the Mayan! As always, I like ending my Sundays in Long Beach where DJ Potira spins Brazilian Baile Funk and you can get your bunda-shaking workouts on with the free dance lesson there every week! Also, it’s the last week of the Outfest LGBT film festival and the Downtown Film Festival Los Angeles so catch some great films if you can!

Don’t forget there are tons of free summer concerts and activities each week, so check out the full schedule of summer goodness here:

Music, Dance, Film, Art & Cultural events July 8-14

weekly list

Welcome to another July edition…more sun, more fun, and too many great events to choose from! I’m keen on catching London Grammar from the UK at their US debut at Monday’s School Night. Tuesday is Quetzal Guerrero’s Cali Hustle, one of my favorite music monthlies. Wednesday the only place for me to be is Amadou & Mariam’s show at the Fonda and if I have gas left (which is doubtful after one of their nonstop high-energy shows), the monthly Discotan near downtown or Bombilla on the westside look tempting.

Thursday is practically an early start of the weekend with so much great free music: Ximena Sariñana at the Hammer, Surfer Blood at the 1st of the Twilight Concerts on the Santa Monica Pier, and 2 genre-mixing bands at the Levitt Pavilions: Gangstagrass, combining rap and bluegrass (say what?) at MacArthur Park and Western Standard Time, a big band orchestra tribute to the Skatalites, a Jamaican ska band. Don’t forget it’s also the monthly Downtown Art Walk!

Friday, my beloved Las Cafeteras perform a noon show at California Plaza and come night time, it’s all about supporting the community in Boyle Heights at the monthly CaminArte marketplace at Mariachi Plaza. There will be great arts & craft vendors and local musical talent, along with Joe “Peps” of Aztlan Underground performing at Espacio 1839 and an open house for Las Fotos Project, an organization empowering young latinas; all the events are within walking distance of each other. Farther away, Vieux Farka Toure from Mali is performing at the Levitt in Pasadena and my Brazilian friends Katia Moraes and Samba Society are playing a free show in the La Brea area.

Saturday, La Santa Cecilia plays in Santa Monica while Viento Callejero, their former guitarist Gloria Estrada’s new project, plays near downtown. Her new band also plays a free show on Sunday at a great free event in Long Beach along with other talented LA groups El Haru Kuroi and Atabey. Francophiles won’t want to miss Bastille Day on Sunday and there’s a great fundraiser for a documentary film The Fez Forever, about the first Arabic nightclub on the West Coast opened in 1959 and an iconic part of LA history. As always, I like ending my Sundays in Long Beach where DJ Potira spins Brazilian Baile Funk and you can get your bunda-shaking workouts on with the free dance lesson there every week!

Also, the Outfest LGBT film festival, in its 30th year, starts this week and I keep missing opportunities to see Adunni & Nefretiti, a female ensemble from Nigeria. They’ll be performing workshops & shows all this week so I hope to catch them before they leave LA!

Don’t forget there are tons of free summer concerts and activities each week, so check out the full schedule of summer goodness here:

Have a great week, Angelenos…enjoy this video of Andrea Zuñiga, one of the many talented artists and voices from our diverse, beautiful City of Angels. If you like her music, come catch her at the CaminArte on Friday!
