Grand Park Turns One!

This Thursday, October 10, the Grand Park turns ONE and the one year anniversary party will feature KCRW‘s Jeremy Sole, Ethio Cali, and a blues collaboration between Cedric Watson and Sidi Toure from Mali! When word started spreading about the grand opening of a huge park in downtown LA , we were as puzzled and unimpressed as anyone who’s walked all over downtown’s dense concrete, brick & glass jungle. What open green space are they talking about? Well, we were quickly won over by this beautification project tucked neatly (and almost secretly) between the Music Center and expanding downward level by level to the steps of City Hall. Here’s a video of the Grand Park Opening one year ago.

Subsuelo ft. Los Tres Marks: Nu-Mark + Money Mark + Mark de Clive-Lowe

Subsuelo, the best underground dance party in LA, keeps outdoing themselves! In year one, they quickly outgrew their intimate home at Eastside Luv Bar in Boyle Heights, with lines out the door as LA’s newest best-kept secret. The LA Times and LA Weekly let the secret out as year two saw them adding to their monthly parties with special events, combining their trademark fusion of global dance music and live flamenco with some of the biggest names in the underground dance scene, like Mad Decent and Nickodemus. Not ones to rest on their laurels in year three, this Friday, October 11 at the Bootleg Theater, promises to be another epic sweatfest, featuring not just 1, but 3 epic DJs…all named Mark. Ladies and Gentlemen, Subsuelo presents for your listening and dancing pleasure…Los Tres Marks! Nu-Mark + Money Mark + Mark de Clive-Lowe!

The weather’s thankfully going to cool off pretty dramatically from the heat wave, with more Fall-like weather and some chance of rain by mid-week! Tons of film festivals this week, the monthly Cali Hustle with Quetzal Guerrero on Tuesday and a special Subsuelo on Friday! But the big can’t miss event this week is Filter Magazine’s Culture Collide music festival with tons of emerging & indie bands from around the world, as well as one of our favorites, Alice Russell, soul singer from the UK — there’s 2 opportunities to see her this weekend…we think you’re crazy if you don’t see her!
