When you have Ubuntu, you embrace others. You are generous, compassionate. If the world had more Ubuntu, we would not have war. Go for Sisters Special Screening + Q&A @ Nuart Theatre – 7pm, $8.50-$11, All Ages
Bernice (LisaGay Hamilton) and Fontayne (Yolanda Ross) grew up the closest of friends, but time sent them down different paths. When they meet again after twenty years Fontayne is a recovering addict fresh out of jail, and Bernice is her new parole officer. After Bernice’s son Rodney goes missing on the Mexican border—his shady associates all in hiding or brutally murdered—Bernice realizes she needs someone with the connections to navigate Rodney’s world without involving the police… and turns to her old friend. The pair enlist the services of wily but nearly blind ex-cop Freddy Suárez (Edward James Olmos, Stand and Deliver, “Battlestar Galactica”) and plunge into the dim underbelly of Tijuana, forced to unravel a complex web of human traffickers, smugglers and corrupt cops. As much a story of relationships as a story of crime, Go for Sisters is a welcome return to the border for acclaimed writer/director John Sayles (Lone Star, Men With Guns, Eight Men Out). Writer/director John Sayles and actors Edward James Olmos and LisaGay Hamilton will appear in person on Friday, November 15 for a Q&A after the 7:00pm show. They will also appear on Saturday, November 16 for a Q&A after the 7:00pm show.

The world premiere of a woman’s quest to find herself in the Americas while exploring her sex and love affair with soccer. Written and performed by Karen Anzoategui with musical collaboration by Louie Perez of Los Lobos, CAVA and Walter Miranda, ¡Ser! is a riveting personal narrative that examines a queer Latina’s strained relationship with each of her two homes: Los Angeles, and Buenos Aires. Spending years in both countries, she dreams of a pilgrimage to meet her soccer idol Diego Maradona and see him play. The back and forth migration of her upbringing, amidst major moments in Argentine history, leaves her with few role models save an over-sexed Argentinean English teacher and a mute that communicates via horn. Featuring live music and her own soccer skills, Karen delights in her zany journey to find community and love in pursuit of her ¡GOL! Opening Night Fundraiser | $50 | Includes post show reception and live music.
