I worked all weekend to build the new site so I hope you like it! It’s still a work in progress and we’re always trying to improve things on this site for YOU, so if you haven’t taken our survey yet, please do! We’re giving away up to $50 to thank you for your time! The biggest improvement is a more powerful calendar feature and I’m going to add a way for people to submit events to it! Look for more changes soon and please let me know how you like it!
There’s so much going on this week. November is Native American Heritage Month and there are many events like the ongoing Red Nation Film Festival in NoHo, the LA Skins Fest in downtown this week, and the inaugural Indigenous Film Festival in Joshua Tree this weekend. Tonight Tuesday is the 1 year anniversary of Cali Hustle, the monthly musical magic hosted by Quetzal Guerrero and Miss Sunny Z at The Virgil with some special guests. Quetzal’s music represents his Native American, Mexican and Brazilian roots all blending into a smooth fusion of Latin rhythms, bossa nova, soul, funk with his virtuoso violin and guitar…don’t miss the show! It’s not everyday a Latin Grammy winner from Portugal comes to town, so check out Mariza at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Guyanese dub legend Mad Professor is in town on Wednesday at Dub Club. He produced Argentinian reggae/hip hop sensation Alika‘s latest album and she’s in LA too, playing Afro Funke on Thursday. Dancers, have you tried the Brazilian dance Forró? The monthly Forró LA happens Saturday at Tropico de Nopal and theLIFT takes off for an all night dance binge until Sunday morning. This month, we not only reflect on the history and culture of our indigenous brothers and sisters but also bring light to important issues affecting their communities all over the Americas. We’ll leave you a song from Guatemala musicians Dr. Sativo, M.C.H.e. and Tzutu Baktun Kan.
As part of the Walt Disney Concert Hall‘s 10th Anniversary Celebration, world renowned singer and Latin Grammy winner Mariza performs there on Tuesday, November 12. With her intense vocals and stage presence, Mariza fuses Portuguese national music of fado with flamenco and blues in an electric blend of traditional and contemporary rhythms. Don’t miss this captivating, soulful night of music! Ticket information here.
My apologies for the late post this week! There was so much non-stop goodness over the Halloween and Dia de los Muertos weekend, I got hit with a severe cold. Still getting over it and willing myself enough energy to see Terakaft tonight! Work in progress…more events to be posted. Have a great week, Angelenos! ~ Tom
