This Thursday, October 10, the Grand Park turns ONE and the one year anniversary party will feature KCRW‘s Jeremy Sole, Ethio Cali, and a blues collaboration between Cedric Watson and Sidi Toure from Mali! When word started spreading about the grand opening of a huge park in downtown LA , we were as puzzled and unimpressed as anyone who’s walked all over downtown’s dense concrete, brick & glass jungle. What open green space are they talking about? Well, we were quickly won over by this beautification project tucked neatly (and almost secretly) between the Music Center and expanding downward level by level to the steps of City Hall. Here’s a video of the Grand Park Opening one year ago.
This first year is just the first phase of a continuing and expanding project to have an innovative green outdoor space in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. They’ve renovated the grounds with a restored fountain and splash zone with jets, that was popular with the kids this summer, installed drought resistant plants and eye-catching hot-pink park benches.
In just one year, the Grand Park has hosted huge block parties, including the huge 4th of July party with fireworks over City Hall, Mayor Garcetti‘s inauguration featuring Moby, a steady stream of concerts featuring local and international artists and a diversity of community events, like weekly yoga & exercise classes, lunchtime concerts, outdoor movie screenings, a farmers market, food trucks, and something for everyone!
My awesome friend Tati and her Grand Park team have also collaborated this past year with the Music Center, the LA Philharmonic at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and other partners to bring a renewed spotlight to this historical hub of the arts, music and culture in Los Angeles, as well as providing a beautiful outdoor space to relax. They’re working hard to make the Grand Park “the Park for Everyone” and we’re looking forward to the great things they have in store as the Park’s growth and innovation continues in year two! Bookmark the Grand Park’s calendar and come celebrate, dance and congratulate the Grand Park team for a job well done!
