Music, Dance, Film, Art & Cultural Events October 29 – November 3

weekly list

Happy Halloween and Dia de los Muertos week! Besides the festivities are a lot of great music, starting with 2 awesome Australian bands on Wednesday: Hiatus Kaiyote at the Skirball and Clairy Browne and the Bangin’ Rackettes at Sainte Rock. Wear your costume to La Chamba Chicha‘s 4 year anniversary party at La Cita! Thursday, our favorite annual Halloween tradition is the West Hollywood Carnaval! And this year, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day follow on Friday and Saturday, so there are spectacular Day of the Dead celebrations all over LA! Friday, our favorite LA afrobeat orchestra Mexico 68 will be playing at a free Day of the Dead event in Long Beach, while Clairy Browne and the Bangin’ Rackettes have another show with another 2 of our favorite local acts: The Dustbowl Revival and Raquel Rodriguez. Saturday, we’re going to honor and celebrate our dearly departed loved ones at these 3 Dia de los Muertos celebrations all close to each other and community-driven…sorry Hollywood Forever Cemetary, you put on a good show too, but we just couldn’t see ourselves braving the traffic congestion and paying $15 when we can support our communities and great acts like Irene Diaz / Niña Dioz / Maria del Pilar / Mexican Institute of Sound at Eastside Luv, Nortec Collective Presents: Bostich+Fussible / El Conjunto Nueva Ola / Cumbia Machin / Raul y Mexia / La Chamba / Subsuelo at Grand Park, and Grammy-winning Quetzal / Arabian Prince & more at Self-Help Graphics. We’ll leave you with this classic animated short to put you in the right macabre mood, as the rich cultural and indigenous roots of these festivals remind us that death is a natural part of life.

weekly list

Gonna be one of those weeks with clouds in the morning and sunshine in the afternoon but hey, we need a little gloom as Halloween and Dia de los Muertos approach! A bit of a slow week…good, because we need the time to decide on our costumes! There are already plenty of pre-Halloween parties this weekend to get dressed up for, especially if you love zombies! Saturday is the annual Thrill the World day as well as the Long Beach Zombie Walk! Our friend Nancy Arteaga, LA band-promoter extraordinaire, is having her birthday at Funky Sole, featuring Jungle Fire (Update: Jungle Fire unable to attend but other special guests in the house!) and our friends, the Bombilla crew on the West side, are having a Halloween bash featuring Very Be Careful. Also, our girl Kara Mack is having her album release party at the weekly Afro Funke’ Thursday so come out and support! Here’s a taste of her sublime Afro-soul.

weekly list

A very pleasant sunny week in the 80s in store…Summer never really left LA, did it? This week, Subsuelo is getting funky on Wednesday with our good friend Luis Narino’s band, Noble Creatures, in the house and the Funky Sole DJs! Enjoy the warm weather while it lasts, folks! Because all good things come to an end and that includes the last Bodega for the year! So come out this Sunday and go out with a bang with Cut Chemist on the decks!

Grand Park Turns One!

This Thursday, October 10, the Grand Park turns ONE and the one year anniversary party will feature KCRW‘s Jeremy Sole, Ethio Cali, and a blues collaboration between Cedric Watson and Sidi Toure from Mali! When word started spreading about the grand opening of a huge park in downtown LA , we were as puzzled and unimpressed as anyone who’s walked all over downtown’s dense concrete, brick & glass jungle. What open green space are they talking about? Well, we were quickly won over by this beautification project tucked neatly (and almost secretly) between the Music Center and expanding downward level by level to the steps of City Hall. Here’s a video of the Grand Park Opening one year ago.
