Wow this show just snuck up on me — I only found out about it tonight thanks to the ever-connected Wamuhu of PriMo Arts. We last saw Laura Mvula at the Bootleg Theater and the UK soul and gospel singer had us instantly mesmerized with her exquisite voice and beautiful melodies, with songs ranging from the upbeat Green Garden to the intimate, haunting She. Not too long ago, Laura was answering phones as a receptionist and sending out demo tapes and the rest is history — she’s burst upon the music scene with her debut album Sing to the Moon released earlier this year.
I don’t think the Bootleg Theater was prepared for the fast word of mouth and such a big crowd because there were more people waiting in line outside than people inside during her show. A lot of us were disappointed in missing so much of her set there but this will not be problem at the bigger El Rey Theater this Tuesday, September 17. I’m getting there early this time just to be sure and to catch KING, a trio based in LA that I’ve been wanting to see for a while now. This show is the last stop on Laura Mvula’s September US tour and a homecoming show for KING, who’ve been opening for her. Tickets for the all-ages show are $20 (with $5 service fee thru El Rey online store and $10 service fee thru Ticketmaster). Doors open at 8pm.
