IMANI TOLLIVER is a widely published and accomplished poet, dedicated to crafting emotions into tangible pieces of work, ultimately galvanizing her voice into one of the most courageous in contemporary American literature. She has been a featured poet across the country, locally as well as the Smithsonian Institute. JASON LUCKETT is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and essayist based in Los Angeles. Supporting six albums and three independently released EPs, Jason regularly tours the United States and Europeand has shared the stage or recorded with Tracy Chapman, the Indigo Girls, Melissa Etheridge, Jeff Buckley, jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell and members of Bauhaus and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The Hollywood Brazilian Film Festival returns in its 5th year featuring the latest indie film talent from Brazil. Talize Sayegh, the founder, is passionate about bringing the newest voices in Brazilian cinema to the forefront here in Hollywood, building bridges between the 2 influential hubs of film-making and showing insightful films that reflect a country and culture that is ever-changing and fast-growing. With Brazil dominating the global news lately and the social transformation that is taking place, it’s a great opportunity to see how independent Brazilian cinema is reflecting the dynamic diversity, changing times and social consciousness of the country. Except for the opening and closing night galas, all screenings are free.

I like to call Irene Diaz LA’s rising Fiona Apple – such a big, soaring voice to go with her poetic ballads. The multi-talented singer, songwriter, pianist and guitarist is having her official EP release party at The Edison, the popular vintage underground bar in downtown, so bring a date and dress up for an elegant night of intimate music.

We at theLIFT are so honored to be hosting and presenting this soon to be super power of a band. The Melbourne quartet is a rapidly rising internationally acclaimed “future soul” band. In just two years, highly-respected artists, audiophiles and everyday people have been waxing poetic about HIATUS KAIYOTE. the music is diverse and it expands into a sound that can’t fit within the boundaries of a single genre. each track is like a key ingredient in the listening experience that adds to a fusion of jazz, hip-hop, electronic, opera, rock and soul. subtle traces of the group’s major influences, ranging from STEVIE WONDER, ERYKAH BADU, and J DILLA to FLYING LOTUS are imbedded in the project.

Every Wednesday, come listen to soul diva Raquel Rodriquez and her band, The Big Guys, play unplugged at the Perch rooftop lounge in downtown. LA native Raquel Rodriquez is a fast rising star and has not wasted any time since graduating from the prestigious Hamilton High School Academy of Music and USC Thornton School of Music. Raquel and her 7-piece band have been performing all over LA and her first album was just released this past June. So come grab a drink and enjoy her sultry sounds in this intimate space overlooking the gorgeous downtown nightscape while you still can.

Desert Nights @ The Standard, Hollywood – Free, 21+
Desert Nights is a weekly aural oasis at The Standard, Hollywood. Each Wednesday, KCRW’s DJ Valida curates 3 musical acts to perform a special acoustic set in the hotel’s Cactus Lounge. The vibe is warm and intimate, evoking an impromptu jam in a musician’s living room. Live music begins at 7:30pm with Valida spinning KCRW favorites in-between sets. There is no cover charge for this event.
