Music, Dance, Film, Art & Cultural events July 29 – August 4

TUE 7/30

Spark: A Burning Man Story @ USC – Free w RSVP, All Ages
Deep in the dusty expanse of the Nevada desert, over 60,000 people from around the world join together in a weeklong bacchanalia of art, self-expression and music. The once forsaken landscape is transformed into a temporary Shangri-La that doesn’t end until a towering effigy is set alight and burned to the ground in a ritual frenzy. This is Burning Man. Originally imagined as an experiment in creating a utopia where the restrictions of modern life – the nine-to-five rat race, laws and confining societal norms – vanish, the event’s popularity and scope has now exceeded even the creators’ wildest dreams. SPARK: A BURNING MAN STORY brings audiences behind-the-scenes of the legendary celebration, shining a light on the triumphs and challenges of the artists fighting harsh realities to keep their ideals of unbridled freedom and community alive.

Mohammed Alidu & Bizung Family and Nasambu & Mystic Nomads @ Del Monte Speakeasy, Venice – $10, 21+
2 very hard-working and soulful African artists in LA and their bands! I know them well and their socially conscious music and uplifting rhythms! Mohammed Alidu, a most notable musician from Ghana born into the heralded 1000+ year Bizung family lineage of talking drum chiefs, has been making music since he was 3-years old. Nasambu, a singer-songwriter of Kenyan descent, has captivated audiences worldwide with the power of African music and dance. Her music brings together a unique rhythmic fusion of grooves from across the diaspora combined with soul-stirring lyrics reflecting the realities of today’s mystic nomads living in a global village.

Spanish Dracula with Live Music @ Cinefamily, Melrose – $12, All Ages
Not many know that when the English-speaking cast for the famous 1931 Dracula film went home at night, Spanish-speaking actors came on set to shoot a version that many say is superior. Grammy-nominated guitarist Gary Lucas will be adding to the eerie mood with his live music score.
