*The Black Lips: You Know, For Kids! screening @ Cinefamily – $12, All Ages
After two years of planning and tremendous changes throughout the region, the Black Lips’ tour of the Middle East finally came to fruition in the fall of 2012, but it wasn’t easy: promoters in Jordan and Egypt backed out because the band had just played in Israel, and a show in Iraq had to be changed at the last minute when an explicit band video was viewed by a government official. You Know, For Kids documents this journey through one of the most exciting regions in the world, including three groundbreaking stops in Egypt (the last known American rock band to play in that country being The Grateful Dead in 1978!) Get on the bus with The Black Lips and their friends, Lebanese indie rockers Lazzy Lung. See the people of the Middle East the way they really are: shopkeepers and restaurant owners, skaters, graffiti artists and musicians, revolutionaries and dreamers. Kids like you and us. You’ll never look at the Middle East the same way again. Director and Black Lips band members in person — plus, Cole Alexander will DJ after the film!

*DJ Potira @ Lucy’s 51, Toluca Lake – Free, 21+
One of my favorite LA DJs, Potira is spinning every Monday night in February here. I was there at her birthday celebration and joined by Quetzal Guerrero and Gisella Sambista, they brought the house down with nonstop thumping music from samba, baile funk, hiphop to old school classics! So start your week right! With positive vibes and great tunes. Drink specials, awesome people, the best tunes and no cover charge.

We’re bringing a few guests along to help celebrate year 1392 in all its glory on the dancefloor. Malabomba is the monthly Gypsy-spiced international dance party for the City of Angels! Your faithful hosts, DJ Jason Savvy and DJ Cat Hair, will be throwing lit firecrackers into your pants, spinning the best in chicha, chalga, Romany punk jams, Polish techno, Soviet disko, Balkan brass madness, and any and all other global sounds known to put those sweet asses in motion. On Wednesday, March 27th, MALABOMBA! explodes with the music of DEUX SONS, an LA-based six-piece instrumental band that brings you the Balkans with a twist. Their name is French for “two sounds,” which may refer to the band’s core of accordionist Max Whipple and trumpeter Spencer Ludwig. But it might just as well conjure up the contrasts that make this band unique: the way Balkan brass is paired up with American jazz.

Tree of Fire world premiere play @ Inner-City Arts/The Rosenthal Theater, Downtown – $15, All Ages
This is the final night of its world premiere run! TREE OF FIRE is about a Magnolia tree catching fire in an aged and ominous women’s prison. Three female inmates, forgotten and left to perish, are jolted into memories of their past that inform the truth of their souls and the urgent need to expose the inhumanity of the prison to the world. By supporting Tree of Fire,  you are a part of giving voice to a timely play that raises critical conversation about gender, race, and the Prison Industrial Complex.”Tree of Fire” sings and screams for those who have no voice. It’s a modern day “Trojan Women” that leads us on a mythic journey into the minds and spirits of incarcerated women.  We meet women who are separated from their families, from their lives, from time itself.  Never self pitying and often very funny, this piece takes us into the soul of their experience.  Style and content are boldly woven together to give us an intimate encounter with the heart of the imprisoned.” -Leon Martell, Playwright.
