(UPDATE 2/20/13: Subsuelo just announced a big event on Friday March 8 featuring Nickodemus celebrating his new release “Turntables on the Ramblas” — which features global bass remixes inspired by the music of Spain. If you buy a presale ticket today, you get to skip the line at both events and get in for free tonight!)
Tonight is my favorite party of the month! Subsuelo (meaning ‘underground’) is not the best-kept secret tucked away in a little bar in East LA anymore. After a raging pre-Grammy party that ABC/Univision called “LA’s most happening, eclectic, underground party” on top of already rave reviews from LA Times and LA Weekly, I wouldn’t blame them for letting the steamrolling popularity go to their heads. But the Subsuelo crew, who consists of host Gazoo, DJs Canyon Cody, Gozar, Ethos, rapper Gnotes, photographer Farah Sosa, and flamenco performers La Tigresa, Gabriel Osuna and Gerardo Morales, are still keeping the vibe down-to-earth, unpretentious and all-welcoming of all music and culture loving souls into their house.
That casa is Eastside Luv Bar in Boyle Heights and the special guest this month is LoCura, San Francisco’s genre-bending, boundary-pushing flamenco/rumba/funk/reggae/cumbia band. Here they are with La Tigresa ripping it up at Subsuelo’s backyard house party last month. It’s La Tigresa’s birthday so come out and celebrate con la familia Subsuelo! Guest DJs Yukicito, morelian & izzy*wise are going to be adding extra fire to the festivities…so make sure to get there early to avoid being left out in the cold! $5, 21+ Facebook event.
