As part of Black History month, the Consulate General of Mexico is presenting The Third Root: the Musical Legacy of the Afro-Mexicans, a special program that explores the rich history of African musical influence in Mexico. Mexican composer-musician José Gurría and a music ensemble, including members of LA’s very own Las Cafeteras, playing traditional and modern instruments will lead the audience on a journey from Mexican baroque of the 17th century combining European and native musical traditions to Son Jarocho of African heritage and ending with modern interpretations of these folk traditions. Open to the public and seating is first-come first-serve with RSVP required. RSVP instructions on the Facebook link. This documentary trailer gives a good introduction of the confluence of the different cultures on Mexican music.
