Here are just some of the very many awesome events happening around LA…so soak it all up!

Stuffed Animals & Dental Kits for Homeless Women & Children for Valentine’s Day

Items are picked up from your location & delivered to Fred Jordan Missions, who’ve been helping with the needy in LA since 1944. Calling All People With A Heart. At your home or business please collect clean stuffed animals for homeless women & children @ Fred Jordan Mission on Valentine’s Day. Also ask dental offices in your area to please give dental kits consisting of toothbrush, toothpaste, & floss placed in any container. Call Deon Edwards by Tuesday, Feb. 12th @ 310.808.4552 to schedule someone to come get the stuffed animals & dental kits. If you live far or outside of L.A./ Riverside/ San Bernardino/ or Orange Counties you are welcome to mail your items. Al Gore in a rare public appearance in LA tonight to talk about his new book The Future at the Saban Theatre. Mr. Gore gives us much more to think about besides climate change– from cybersecurity to digitally connected cows.

Favorite place on Monday nights for live music is School Night hosted by KCRW DJ Chris Douridas. Tonight’s lineup features Chali 2na of Jurrasic 5 (who are reuniting for Coachella). Other artists tomorrow are Starting Six, Caught A Ghost and LEAGUES.

Dilla Day Edition @ MOM LA, Short Stop, Echo Park – Free, 21+
Celebrating the life of J Dilla, one of the most influential hip-hop artists who passed away before his time at 32 in 2006. The 2nd annual Dilla Day Edition of MOM LA will be going down tonight! Last year LA turned out the house as we hosted our first J Dilla vs Motown session with special guest House Shoes. This year we’re doin it again, welcoming back House Shoes into the mix along with DJ Rhettmatic of the world famous Beat Junkies. Rhett and Shoes will be droppin all the original J Dilla samples as well as some exclusive Dilla beats. One of my favorite LA DJs, Potira is spinning every Monday night in February here. I was there last Monday at her birthday celebration and joined by Quetzal Guerrero and Gisella Sambista, they brought the house down with nonstop thumping music from samba, baile funk, hiphop to old school classics! It’s Black History Month and this is the 21st Anniversary of the largest Black History event in the country! I just saw Otelo Burning last night…a gripping film based on a true story of South African boys who pick up surfing to escape Aparthied. Just one of over 150 great films showing running from Feb. 2-18!



Chican@ Artivistas at the Intersection of Hope and Imagination @ Scripps College, Claremont – Free, All Ages
Martha Gonzalez, vocalist & founding member of Quetzal, who just won a Grammy this past Sunday, will be give a multimedia presentation on Chican@ artivistas (artist/activists) in East Los Angeles and how they have utilized art and creative expression to de-construct power, challenge multiple patriarchal systems, and build community.

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band & Mardi Gras Parade @ Amoeba Hollywood – Free, All ages
We LOVE NOLA at Amoeba and we are super excited and proud to welcome the incomparable Dirty Dozen Brass Band to our stage to help us celebrate right! Come down on Fat Tuesday and join our now (in)famous second line parade, enjoy DJs spinning New Orleans sounds all afternoon and laissez les bon temps roulez! Shop at Amoeba on Fat Tuesday and help NOLA – we will donate a portion of the day’s proceeds to the TIPITINA’S Foundation and the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic. If you can’t get enough of the The Dirty Dozen Brass Band at Amoeba, they’ll be opening later that night for Allen Toussaint Band for another Mardi Gras party at UCLA! They’re serving it up in style All On A Mardi Gras Day with a pre-show crawfish boil and party on the Royce terrace and these two spectacular flavors of New Orleans music. American songwriter and producer Allen Toussaint is one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R&B. My tip for people who want to get the most bang for their buck and who don’t care to sit down but want to dance: Buy the cheapest floor seats at $20 and then walk right up to the front sides of the stage! I always do that so I can dance to the music at Royce Hall shows!

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church invites you to their Third Annual Zydeco Mass and Mardi Gras Celebration to be held on Fat Tuesday, February 12th. 114th Annual Golden Dragon Parade and Chinese New Year Festival @ Chinatown – Free, All ages
​In celebrating over one hundred years of tradition, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles presents the 114th Annual Golden Dragon Parade. With over thousands and thousands of individuals lining the parade route and thousands viewing the telecast each year, this colorful celebration along North Broadway in Chinatown has become the premiere cultural event in the Southern California Asian-American Community. The parade is on Sat. from 1-3pm and the festival runs through Sunday.

In honor of Black History Month, come celebrate the African roots of Latin music at MOLAA! with Congolese Band; “Afrik Moto, Afro Cuban Band; Francisco Aguabella and DJ Nnamdi Moweta host of Radio Afrodicia on KPFK (90.7FM). This unforgettable evening will merge the best of African and Latin American sounds with performances by Afrik Moto Band from Congo and Afro-Cuban Francisco Aguabella Jazz Band.

Toubab Krewe @ The Mint, Miracle Mile – $12, 21+
Toubab Krewe from North Carolina have studied extensively in West Africa, and by incorporating instruments like the kora and kamel ngoni, the result is a beautiful fusion of Malian music with American Southern sounds.

The Record Company @ The Satellite, Silverlake – $5, 21+
I’ve loved this band since hearing them on KCRW and seeing them live at School Night. A tremendously talented blues & rock band you have to see as soon as you can to experience their over the top energy!

Blazing 45s with Rich Medina @ Nola’s Taste of New Orleans, Downtown – $10, 21+
RICH MEDINA returns to BLAZING 45s with a special 2 hour dance floor set. RICH’s first B45s was in January 2012, it was an memorable party w/ PEANUT BUTTER WOLF and a gang of other dope DJs. RICH is one of the busiest, most travelled DJs working today. He is versatile and expert at rare grooves, deep funk, exotic international jams and soul party rockers. He is behind the Afrobeat tribute nite JUMP N FUNK, currently cohosts the PROPS night in NYC and still finds time for projects like the AFROBEATLES. RICH is in constant demand and we feel fortunate to have him back at BLAZING 45s.

Join DJs Mony Cometa and Kidmatic at Los Globos for the launch of Casually Cool. What first originated as Christopher Hernandez Photography has now developed into casually cool. Chinese New Year Festival @ Chinatown – Free, All ages

The Renaissance 1st Annual Cultural Affair celebrating Black History Month & LAULYP Empowerment Week in assocition with The LA Urban League Young Professionals (LULYP). Portion of proceeds supporting the LAULYP. Open Vodka bar from 9-10pm. We’re asking patrons to please bring books to donate to the Remix Program sponsored by the LAULYP. The Los Angeles Urban League Young Professionals aim to cultivate and support the “Renaissance Teenager” through The Remix program.
